THE KITE

A kite is an object embodying human desire for flying. Flying a kite in the sky, for a human being, is a way of satisfying her deep desire for flying in the infinite space of the sky. Even though a kite originated from necessities of networks and military affairs, it, far from these practical uses, has become a conceptual object signifying human desire of flight.
Interestingly, a kite, made of very simple material, has such a philosophical meaning. Children learn how to fulfil their longing for flying as a bird while flying a kite.
They experience delight of flight through a flying kite in the infinite space which is connected to them by a thin but tense string. Chung, Sun-Jin must remember this joy in her childhood. This is why she chooses a kite as her motif of her art. It is clear that her work is not simply limited to apparent structure of a kite but deeply connected to profound longing for flying in the infinity.
Along with deepening landscape of the inside, she also realizes shape of a kite itself through shaped canvases and brings in the reality of the world through collage of bamboo ribs and strings. It is as if the artist is on the border line between the conceptual world and the reality while flying a kite in the sky of korean traditional paper. Truly, she will deepen her inner world standing on the border line of infinite cycle of dream and the real.
